A Recipe That Came Home with Me

My husband said the other night at dinner, “This is one of my favorite meals you make.” It wasn’t anything special—just one of those meals passed down from my father. The kind I’ve made so many times I don’t even need to look at the recipe. The kind of meal that is comfort and makes you feel good after the first bite.
I have fond memories of my father making this meal for us when we were kids. He was a truck driver, so he was gone sometimes for days at a time. We always liked it when dad was home to cook because he made the best meals! This was one of them.
He would pull out the red and black cookbook (I think it was a Betty Crocker one), and we would get excited because we knew what meal was coming!
So of course I would make this for my family too, and it has become a favorite of theirs too!
Passing down recipes within families is so special to me. Everyone has to eat, but there’s something special about knowing your family enjoys the very meal you’re preparing.
So, here is the recipe for Hamburg Stroganoff, and I hope your family enjoys it as much as mine does. 😊
Hamburg Stroganoff
Ingredients:
· 1 lb. hamburger
· 1 onion, chopped
· ¼ cup butter
· 2 tbsp. flour
· 1 tsp salt
· ¼ tsp. pepper
· 1 can of mushrooms, drained
· 1 can cream of chicken soup
· 1 cup sour cream
· 1 12 oz package egg noodles
Directions:
Add hamburger and onion to the pan, season with salt and pepper, and cook until hamburger is brown. Drain excess fat.
Add in the soup.
Add in the sour cream.
Add in the mushrooms.
Heat through and serve over cooked egg noodles.

You can of course make this your own way. Use fresh mushrooms or a homemade cream of chicken soup; you do you. This is one of those meals I just can’t bring myself to change—I still make it exactly how I remember it from childhood.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that it’s not just the meal itself, but the memories tied to it that make it special. Maybe one day your family will ask for this dish again and again, and it will become part of your story too. That’s the beauty of simple meals—they feed more than just our stomachs. They become part of the rhythm of home.
